Brian Michalowski, Oregon’s newest full-time assistant coach, holds the distinction of being the lowest-paid member of the coaching staff.

According to documents released by the University of Oregon in response to a public records request, Michalowski has inked a two-year contract running through January 2026, with an annual salary of $275,000.

This figure falls below the $450,000 earned by former cornerbacks coach Demetrice Martin during the previous season, with Martin’s recent departure to Michigan State opening up the opportunity for Michalowski to step into an on-field coaching role as the inside linebackers coach.

In contrast to prior contracts for Oregon’s assistant football coaches, Michalowski’s contract features increased bonus potential, reflecting the expansion of the College Football Playoff. He stands to earn up to $155,000 in performance bonuses, a notable increase from the previous cap of $125,000 for UO assistants. These bonuses are contingent upon various achievements, including qualifying for and winning the Big Ten Championship game, as well as progressing through different stages of the College Football Playoff.

Additionally, Michalowski is eligible for an annual $5,000 bonus if the Ducks achieve an Academic Progress Rate score of at least 985.

The terms of Michalowski’s buyout clause stipulate that he would owe 100% of his salary if he were to depart before April 1, decreasing to 50% if he leaves before Feb. 1, 2025, and further reducing to 25% between Feb. 1, 2025, and Jan. 1, 2026. However, this buyout is waived if Michalowski departs to assume a role as an FBS head coach, defensive coordinator with play-calling responsibilities, or NFL head coach or defensive coordinator.

In the event that Oregon terminates Michalowski without cause, he would be entitled to a buyout equivalent to 70% of his remaining salary. Likewise, if head coach Dan Lanning were to leave Oregon, Michalowski would receive 70% of a year’s salary or the remainder of his contract term, whichever is less, mirroring the arrangement for offensive line coach A’lique Terry. Both scenarios are subject to an offset.
