The ex-manager of the Black Cats has shared his thoughts on the current status of the club.

Former Sunderland manager and football icon Paolo Di Canio has recently offered his perspective on the current predicament facing Sunderland AFC.

Following the dismissal of Michael Beale, the club currently lacks a permanent manager. Beale’s tenure lasted just over 60 days before his departure. Interim manager Mike Dodds has stepped in to make on-field decisions temporarily, having previously filled the role between Tony Mowbray’s departure and Beale’s appointment. However, Dodds has faced a challenging start, losing his first two games, while Sunderland’s hopes of reaching the playoffs are diminishing.

Paolo Di Canio, renowned for successfully steering Sunderland away from relegation during his initial tenure as manager, has shared his sentiments regarding the ongoing situation at the Stadium of Light.

During an autograph signing session, the former Italian international was captured on camera discussing the club’s status and his thoughts on their performance.

When asked about Sunderland’s performance last season and their current standing, Paolo Di Canio expressed his views, stating, “During the season they have done a good job because it’s obvious when you are close to the top six that you are doing well. But in this moment, they need to push more obviously, you know, because I can’t imagine Sunderland not playing in the Premier League because of their supporters, their fans, the stadium. They are absolutely amazing, and they deserve to play in the Premier League.”

Reflecting on Di Canio’s time as Sunderland manager, his appointment came amidst significant turmoil, following Martin O’Neill’s departure. His arrival was not without controversy due to past political statements. Despite initial challenges, Di Canio guided the team to crucial victories, notably against Newcastle United in the Tyne-Wear derby, helping Sunderland avoid relegation.

In the subsequent campaign, Di Canio faced an uphill battle after losing key players in the summer transfer window. Despite efforts, the team struggled, leading to his dismissal after a poor start to the season.

As Sunderland navigates through their current season, finding a permanent manager swiftly will be crucial for their future. With playoff hopes diminishing, focus should shift towards building for the next season.
