With an early goal and another right before the end of the first quarter, the Hawks began to take advantage of their superiority by putting pressure on the Cats through scoreboard dominance.
The trend continued into the second quarter, with Geelong struggling to possess the ball due to the Hawks’ relentless pressure, particularly in their defensive zone.
Despite Box Hill missing several scoring opportunities, kicking 2.6 in the second quarter, the Cats found themselves trailing by 29 points at halftime.
Johanna Sunderland showcased her energy in the defensive position, with the second game player emerging as a standout for Geelong, gathering 11 disposals in the initial half, which was a notable highlight.
At halftime, Cats VFLW Coach Elise Coventry ignited her team, inspiring them to step up their game in the third quarter. Brooke Plummer played a pivotal role, showcasing impressive speed, marking abilities, and clearance work, which created scoring opportunities for Geelong within the 50-meter area.
Despite their renewed energy, Geelong couldn’t narrow the gap, as Box Hill regained control, adding three goals to their tally by the end of the quarter. Box Hill’s seasoned players demonstrated their experience in the closing stages of the game, delivering their strongest performance in the last quarter and securing a decisive victory.
During the final term, Box Hill showcased their dominance by scoring seven of their 14 goals, ultimately widening the lead to 96 points when the game concluded. The Hawks outperformed Geelong in key statistical categories, including disposals, inside 50s, and clearances.
Geelong aims to bounce back in their quest for their first win of 2024 when they face the Southern Saints next Saturday.
