The Oklahoma City Thunder reminded with their play that Wednesday night’s game signified a match-up between the club that shares the top record in the West and the now-8-36 San Antonio Spurs. The contest was billed as a match-up between NBA Rookie of the Year hopefuls Victor Wembanyama and Chet Holmgren.
In addition to not having their star rookie guard his Spurs counterpart exclusively, OKC sent multiple players straight at Wemby as soon as he touched the ball.
Conversely, the first overall pick from this past June did protect the second overall pick in the 2022 draft. and frequently without assistance.
Victor Wembanyama responds to the defense of Thunder
The 20-year-old French sensation was questioned by ClutchPoints about Oklahoma City’s defensive attack against him.
“I get some easy baskets sometimes because I have a smaller guy.” However, if I’m paired with a bigger person, I can outrun them in speed. All I have to do is adjust. Wembanyama remarked, “But I just play differently every time because I’ve seen this defense before.”
Wemby’s outlook on double teams
ClutchPoints then inquired as to whether he would have preferred to face Holmgren in person more frequently.
“This year, I haven’t really played one-on-one. Something like one-on-two is the norm. The 20-year-old celebrity retorted, “It’s not really a thing.”
“I was informed that I would return in two minutes as soon as I sat down,” the person said.
Holmgren played thirty minutes and Wembanyama played twenty-eight. All of his stats were superior to the Gonzaga player’s; he finished with the same amount of assists but more points, rebounds, blocks, and steals.
Wemby then takes on the athlete who was most associated with him before to the June draft this year. He’s hoping that by Friday’s game against Scoot Henderson and the Portland Trail Blazers, the minutes limit will be lifted.
