East Carolina has secured a commitment from safety Durante Speer, a member of the class of 2025 from Columbia High School in Decatur, Georgia. Standing at 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighing 175 pounds, Speer made his commitment official during his official visit to ECU over the weekend in Greenville.

Speer had received offers from other schools including Coastal Carolina, Georgia State, and Kent State. His relationship with ECU began when he visited the campus on March 23 during spring practice. The bond continued to strengthen, leading to his announcement of commitment to ECU on Saturday. Speer received an offer from ECU on February 1 and was recruited by safeties coach Damon Magazu.

Speer, primarily a cornerback for Columbia, is poised to excel as a safety in ECU’s defensive scheme. In his junior season, he recorded 44 tackles, along with a sack, an interception, and eight passes defended, contributing to Columbia’s 9-4 record. Known for his adept coverage skills, Speer possesses a physique capable of adding mass and evolving over time. His athleticism extends to track, where he set a school record with a 50.13 400-meter time earlier this spring, alongside impressive marks of 24.60 in the 200-meter and 11.75 in the 100-meter.

During his visit to ECU, Speer was among nine official visitors on campus. He is one of four players committed to the 2025 class, alongside wide receiver Connor Hodge, offensive lineman Jonathan Stokes, and athlete Johnny Williams.

According to 247Sports, Speer is evaluated as a three-star safety, ranked as the 116th-best player at his position nationally, and the 132nd-best player in Georgia.
