Vladimir Coufal expressed frustration at not being offered improved terms when West Ham exercised a one-year option in his contract back in January, as reported by The Athletic.

According to the news outlet’s report on Thursday (March 28), West Ham has since proposed a two-year extension with a salary increase, but negotiations with Coufal’s representative have not yielded an agreement. Additionally, the 31-year-old received interest from an undisclosed Premier League club during the January transfer window, prompting him to reconsider his long-term future with the Hammers in the upcoming summer.

It’s understandable that Coufal felt disappointed about the contract extension earlier this year without any acknowledgment for his contributions in recent seasons. The Daily Mirror highlighted on January 2 that Coufal’s weekly wage is only £35,000, considerably lower than that of most of his West Ham teammates. While this salary is substantial in many contexts, it may seem inadequate for a player who consistently starts for a Premier League team that has been involved in European competitions in recent years.
