Which Quarterback Is Better, Justin Herbert or Matthew Stafford, Per the New Top 40 Rankings?

Given that Justin Herbert and Matthew Stafford play for every football team in Los Angeles, comparisons between them seem inevitable in certain respects. We have more motivation to achieve that thanks to Chris Simms. He ranks the two quarterbacks back-to-back in his yearly “Top 40 QB Countdown,” with Stafford surpassing Herbert for the fifth slot.

They are both behind Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, and Patrick Mahomes. However, Simms combines the two in his third tier, “Damn! Alright.

Comparing Matthew Stafford And Justin Herbert

In certain aspects, it is impossible to avoid comparisons, but in practical matters, it is almost impossible. One’s career is coming to an end, while the other is just getting started. While Herbert is entering his fifth season with the Los Angeles Chargers, he has seen two general managers, three head coaches, and four offensive coordinators in his four seasons with the Los Angeles Rams, one of the most stable environments for a quarterback.

Both have cannons for throwing arms and are large, robust, intelligent, and durable. Stafford started slowly and required several years to get rolling, whereas Herbert started off strong.

But this flips when looking at throwing the ball into harm’s way. Stafford’s career average of 3.2 percent, Herbert’s is 1.9. Stafford has equaled or bettered that number only twice in his 15 seasons.

Their most comparable season was 2021. Both got it done, but in their own ways.

Justin Herbert 672 65.9 5014 7.5 38 15 27 13 7.9 6th

This season will be an interesting year for both quarterbacks. Expectations for their respective teams are to win between 8 and 10 games, both expected to be competing for a playoff spot. The Rams and Chargers are both expected to lean more into the ground game as well. 2024 could be a very comparable year for Stafford and Herbert, but it might look much different statistically than 2021.
