Why the Yankees decided to shift Gleyber Torres from the leadoff position and Anthony Volpe into it

In a move reflecting Anthony Volpe’s impressive performance at the plate from the lower order in the Yankees’ lineup during the initial weeks of the regular season, he was promoted to the leadoff position for Wednesday night’s matchup against the Marlins.

The decision was primarily influenced by Volpe’s remarkable early-season form. The shortstop has emerged as one of the most formidable hitters in baseball, boasting a batting average of .375 (the second-highest in the American League) along with a .444 on-base percentage, consistently delivering quality at-bats.

Manager Aaron Boone emphasized that the decision to promote Volpe extends beyond capitalizing on his current hot streak.

By elevating Volpe to the leadoff spot, the Yankees aim to relieve second baseman Gleyber Torres of the leadoff role. Torres, who has been batting .200 (10-for-50) in the 2024 season, exclusively from the top of the order, is slated to bat sixth between left-handed hitters Anthony Rizzo and Alex Verdugo in Wednesday night’s game.

Boone expressed his belief that Torres has been feeling the pressure, suggesting that maintaining him in the leadoff position might hinder his performance. He remains optimistic that allowing Torres to settle into a different spot in the lineup could potentially yield better results over time.
