In the ninth inning, Giancarlo Stanton’s double leveled the game, and Anthony Rizzo’s subsequent single secured the New York Yankees’ 2-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Friday night. Despite their earlier struggles, the Yankees rallied in the ninth against Tigers’ closer Jason Foley. Stanton, acknowledging their persistence, remarked, “When we still have chances, we still have hope.”

Aaron Judge kickstarted the rally with a single, followed by Alex Verdugo’s unexpected bunt single that advanced Judge to second. Despite striking out in his previous three at-bats, Stanton delivered a crucial double, driving in Judge and moving Verdugo to third. This marked Stanton’s first hit of the season against a pitch of that velocity.

“You have to embrace those moments,” Stanton emphasized. Rizzo then drove in Verdugo with a single past the diving second baseman, clinching New York’s first walk-off win of the year. Rizzo reveled in the celebration as his teammates swarmed him on the field.

“I think Judge getting on base set the tone,” Rizzo reflected. “I don’t know if that bunt was planned. It was a perfect bunt. Stanton came through with a huge hit.”

The Yankees had been grappling with scoring runs, making this win particularly uplifting after dropping three of four games to the Baltimore Orioles.

“It’s a big win,” Stanton remarked. “We just kept pushing, seizing every opportunity we had, and we needed every bit of it.”

Despite Foley’s success in saving games, the Yankees halted his streak. The Tigers have struggled at Yankee Stadium, losing nine of their last ten games there since April 30, 2021.
