Super League
A Super League hooker “rejects” a 2026 NRL switch, and their identity may be disclosed.
An unnamed Super League hooker has reportedly declined an offer to play in the NRL for the 2026 season, opting instead to remain in England. This revelation, shared by Australian sports outlet Code Sports, has sparked speculation about the identity of the player, as discussions center on who could have been approached. The decision highlights the growing appeal of Super League for top-tier talent, even when opportunities arise from the highly competitive NRL.
Several hookers in the Super League are nearing the end of their contracts, making them potential candidates for the mystery player. Moses Mbye of St Helens, who has been linked to a potential NRL move recently, is one possibility. With just 12 months remaining on his contract, reports suggest St Helens is working hard to secure his services beyond 2024. If successful, this might explain why the hooker in question has chosen to stay.
Other contenders include Tom Deakin and Zac Woolford of Huddersfield, who are also approaching the final year of their agreements. However, the most notable name in the mix is Edwin Ipape of the Leigh Leopards. Ipape, a standout player and a sought-after talent, is also in the last year of his contract. While NRL clubs would undoubtedly welcome him back to Australia, Leigh’s determination to retain him could be bolstered by the prospect of a Papua New Guinea team entering the NRL in 2028—a development that may influence Ipape’s decision to remain in the Super League for the time being.
The NRL’s interest in Super League talent isn’t new, and several contracted players have also caught the attention of Australian clubs. For example, Danny Walker of Warrington received interest from the Canberra Raiders earlier this year but ultimately stayed with his club. Similarly, Brad O’Neill of Wigan attracted admirers Down Under but recently committed to a long-term deal with the reigning Super League champions, signaling his loyalty to the competition.
While the exact identity of the hooker rejecting the NRL offer remains unclear, the situation underscores the competitive nature of Super League clubs in retaining their top talent. This decision, coupled with the growing recognition of the league’s quality, highlights the shifting dynamics between Super League and NRL as both competitions vie for elite players.
