Celtics Ownership Drama NBA Finals Rivalry with Mavericks

Following their recent clash in the NBA Finals, where the Boston Celtics triumphed over the Dallas Mavericks in five games, both teams are facing significant changes off the court. The Mavericks, under the ownership of Mark Cuban for over two decades, saw a surprising shift when Cuban sold his majority stake to casino mogul Miriam Adelson. While he retains a minority share, the move was unexpected given Cuban’s long-standing commitment to the franchise.

Now, the Celtics are navigating their own ownership turmoil. Wyc Grousbeck, who has led the team’s ownership group since 2002, is reportedly planning to sell the franchise after securing the Celtics’ 18th championship. Unlike Cuban’s relatively smooth transition, the Celtics’ situation involves reported family disputes over the team’s substantial payroll, which has caused a financial strain.

Sources indicate that the Celtics barely broke even last season and are projected to face an $80 million loss in the upcoming season due to their payroll exceeding $500 million, along with tax penalties. According to the Boston Globe, the Grousbeck family is looking to sell a 51% stake in the team by late 2024 or early 2025, with plans to divest entirely by 2028.

Despite these ownership changes, both the Mavericks and Celtics have maintained their core rosters, setting the stage for a potential rematch in the NBA Finals in 2025. As both teams prepare for the next season, the dynamics within their ownership groups could have significant implications for their f

utures.
