Dragons 2025 Roster Shake-Up: New Look and Key Players for Round 1

After a disappointing finish to the 2024 season, the St George Illawarra Dragons are entering 2025 with a roster overhaul that reflects Shane Flanagan’s mission to bring experience and consistency to the team. Falling short in the previous season, the Dragons lost control of their finals bid, culminating in four losses across the final five games. This year, Flanagan has recruited major talent, including Damien Cook, Valentine Holmes, and Clint Gutherson, adding new depth and bolstering the team’s veteran presence. However, the departure of former captain Ben Hunt has raised concerns, especially as the Dragons search for stability at halfback.

Flanagan’s recruitment strategy has focused on building a stronger core through experienced players. With Valentine Holmes reuniting with Flanagan and Damien Cook moving from South Sydney, the Dragons aim to fortify both their backline and their spine. The addition of Clint Gutherson is a bold move, shifting the versatile Tyrell Sloan from fullback to the wing. Despite losing Zac Lomax, who had a breakout season leading to his selection in Origin and national teams, the Dragons have a promising foundation in their backs, with Moses Suli and Sloan ready to make a statement.

For the Round 1 lineup, Kyle Flanagan is expected to step up as halfback in Hunt’s absence, potentially pairing with young prospect Lyhkan King-Togia. In the forwards, the Dragons will lean on Francis Molo and Jack de Belin in the front row, with additional support from Blake Lawrie and Hame Sele. Cook’s arrival as the starting hooker moves Jacob Liddle to the bench, and Luciano Leilua and Jaydn Su’A are set to bring strength to the edges. With a mix of youth and experience, Flanagan has crafted a starting 17 that will be tested early in the season.

Several players are vying for backup roles, notably Ryan and Toby Couchman, who continue to push for bench spots. Raymond Faitala-Mariner and Tom Eisenhuth are expected to round out the lineup, giving the Dragons a versatile and robust roster heading into 2025. Although the team will look different without Lomax and Hunt, the revamped lineup brings renewed energy and potential to make a mark in the NRL. The season opener will reveal whether Flanagan’s roster shake-up can steer the Dragons back into contention.
