How Nebraska Football Can Secure a Win Against Illinois

Published

on

Nebraska is gearing up for a crucial Big Ten showdown against No. 25 Illinois this Friday, and they don’t need to overcomplicate things to get the job done. Head coach Matt Rhule’s squad is chasing their first 4-0 start since 2016, but they’ll face a tough challenge in Bret Bielema’s well-prepared Illinois team. For Nebraska to come out on top, three key strategies must be executed.

Run the Ball When It Counts
First, Nebraska must establish a balanced yet effective run game. While Illinois boasts a strong secondary, Nebraska shouldn’t focus solely on running the ball 40-45 times. Offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield has demonstrated a desire for balance between the pass and run games, and that trend is likely to continue. However, running the ball when it counts—on first downs, in the red zone, and in the fourth quarter—will be vital to controlling the game. If the Huskers can execute their ground attack when it matters most, they’ll be in a strong position to win.

Take Care of the Ball
Turnovers are another key factor that could determine the outcome. Nebraska has been careful with the ball this season, maintaining a +3 turnover margin, but Illinois is even better at +8. Ball security will be crucial in this matchup, as both teams rank among the top in yards per point efficiency. Nebraska’s ability to limit turnovers will play a significant role in maintaining offensive momentum and keeping Illinois at bay.

Steal Yards on Special Teams
Finally, special teams could be the deciding factor. Nebraska has struggled with long kickoff returns in recent games and cannot afford to give up easy yards to Illinois. Punter Brian Buschini will need to perform at his best, flipping the field and pinning Illinois deep in their own territory. Additionally, any extra yards gained from returns by Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda could give Nebraska’s offense the boost they need to seal the win.

If Nebraska can successfully run the ball, take care of the ball, and steal yards on special teams, they’ll not only beat Illinois but do so convincingly. My prediction: Nebraska 31, Illinois 10.
