Eels Poised to Secure Signing of Young Halfback

Parramatta Eels are closing in on the acquisition of Ronald Volkman, nearly a year after the young halfback faced the disappointment of his terminated Dragons contract. The 22-year-old has been in advanced discussions with the Eels, signaling a potential new chapter in his career under the guidance of head coach Jason Ryles, who aims to enhance the club’s playmaking options.

Volkman’s journey has been marked by ups and downs. Having made five first-grade appearances for the Warriors between 2022 and 2023, his performances in the NSW Cup earned him recognition as a rising talent. After parting ways with the Warriors, he signed a one-year deal with the Dragons for the 2024 season. Unfortunately, a failed medical due to a pre-existing shoulder injury that required surgery led to the termination of his contract. The Warriors stepped in to cover the costs of his surgery and rehabilitation, while the Dragons faced a $40,000 fine for the oversight.

Eels Poised to Secure Signing of Young Halfback

As the 2025 NRL season approaches, the Eels have emerged as frontrunners to secure Volkman’s services, overtaking earlier interest from the Sharks, who have reportedly ceased negotiations. This potential signing reflects Ryles’ commitment to strengthening his squad’s depth after injuries plagued the Eels last season. While Dylan Brown and Mitchell Moses remain the preferred halves pairing, Volkman’s inclusion would provide critical cover and competition in the pivotal playmaking roles.

If finalized, this deal could serve as a much-needed fresh start for Volkman, while bolstering Parramatta’s ability to navigate the challenges of the upcoming season. For the Eels, it’s an opportunity to invest in young talent that could pay dividends in the years ahead.
