Former Wakefield Trinity Captain Finds New Coaching Role
Jason Demetriou, the ex-Wakefield Trinity captain and notable figure in rugby league, has embarked on a new chapter in his coaching career following his dismissal from the South Sydney Rabbitohs.
Demetriou, remembered for leading Wakefield’s dramatic escape from Super League relegation in 2006, faced a challenging period in the NRL. After guiding the Rabbitohs to their fifth consecutive preliminary final during his debut season, he struggled to maintain success. The team missed the play-offs in 2023 and endured a tough start to 2024, leading to his mid-season departure.
Despite these setbacks, Demetriou’s career includes significant highlights. He was part of the North Queensland Cowboys’ coaching staff during their 2015 Grand Final triumph and has held various coaching roles across the NRL. Most recently, he served as the head coach for Papua New Guinea in the Pacific Championships, further cementing his reputation as a seasoned mentor in the sport.
Now, Demetriou takes on a new challenge, heading the rugby league program at Westfields Sports High School, a prestigious institution known for developing athletic talent. The school expressed enthusiasm about his appointment, highlighting his vast experience and dedication to nurturing the next generation of rugby league players.
In a social media announcement, the school stated, “Jason Demetriou brings a wealth of NRL experience and a proven track record. His leadership will be a tremendous asset as we build on our legacy of excellence. We’re excited to see the positive impact he will have on our players and program.”
This move marks a fresh opportunity for Demetriou to shape the future stars of rugby league while continuing his legacy of fostering talent and success in the sport.
