Broncos Star Set to Sign Lucrative Contract Extension
Reece Walsh is set to extend his tenure with the Brisbane Broncos, having reached an agreement on a substantial long-term contract. The talented fullback, who is just 22 years old, has quickly established himself as one of the most prominent figures in rugby league over the last two seasons, making significant impacts in both the NRL and State of Origin competitions.
Although Walsh was poised to enter free agency this November, reports indicate he has agreed to a four-year deal worth $4.4 million, as confirmed by Nine reporter Neil Breen. While the contract hasn’t been officially signed yet, terms are in place, and the total deal is projected to be valued at around $5 million over five years, marking Walsh as a player earning nearly a million dollars annually.
Walsh’s new contract will likely bring added pressure regarding his performance, especially following a disappointing season for the Broncos, who failed to qualify for the finals in 2024. However, former NRL great Andrew Johns believes the contract represents a savvy move for the club, describing it as “an absolute steal” if Walsh can maintain his health on the field. He noted that modern fans often follow individual players rather than teams, highlighting Walsh’s potential to draw attention.
Support for the contract extension also comes from Brad Fittler, who praised the financial aspects of the deal, emphasizing Walsh’s popularity and marketability. Despite facing challenges this past season due to injuries and concussions, Walsh’s Maroons coach, Billy Slater, is optimistic about his future. Slater believes that the next phase of Walsh’s career with the Broncos will be his best yet, praising his strong work ethic and commitment to the game. He acknowledged that while Walsh has a reputation as a lively character, his dedication and desire to succeed set him apart. This willingness to stay with the Broncos, even for less money elsewhere, showcases Walsh’s loyalty and the mutually beneficial nature of the deal for both player and club.
