Gilbert Arenas Discusses Klay Thompson’s Opportunity with the Mavericks
As Klay Thompson prepares for his debut season with the Dallas Mavericks, former NBA star Gilbert Arenas has shared insights on what this move means for Thompson’s career. Arenas highlighted that Thompson is stepping into a role with significantly less pressure than he experienced during his time with the Golden State Warriors, where he was often expected to be a key scorer.
In his comments, Arenas noted that Thompson was crucial for the Warriors’ success, often needing to average between 20 to 22 points per game. However, with the Mavericks, he won’t bear that same burden. “He doesn’t need to be that guy in Dallas,” Arenas explained, suggesting that Thompson’s scoring responsibilities will be alleviated due to the presence of Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, who are already established offensive leaders.
Thompson’s new role allows him to focus on efficient scoring rather than being a primary option. Arenas emphasized that if Thompson contributes by hitting a few key three-pointers, it could be enough to help the Mavericks thrive without the intense pressure he faced in previous seasons.
This change comes at a crucial time for Thompson, who has been seeking redemption after injuries impacted his performance. Moving away from the Warriors, where expectations were sky-high, may provide him with the fresh start he needs. Last season, Thompson averaged 17.9 points per game, and while he may not be the All-Star caliber player he once was, his experience and scoring ability remain valuable assets for the Mavericks.
With Thompson set to play as a third option on a talent-rich team, his contributions could be pivotal in helping the Mavericks compete for a championship. As they look to build on last season’s playoff experience, Thompson’s ability to adapt to this new role could make a significant difference in their quest for success in the upcoming season.
