Manchester United Joins Race to Sign Angel Gomes Amid Growing Transfer Interest
Manchester United has entered the race to sign former academy star Angel Gomes, a move that could disrupt Newcastle United’s transfer plans. Newcastle, who are eyeing a future move for the 24-year-old midfielder, now face competition from Tottenham Hotspur and United, with Gomes’ recent performances for England attracting significant attention.
The former United player, who impressed in his full international debut against Finland, has become one of Ligue 1’s standout creative midfielders. His contract with Lille expires at the end of the season, allowing him to negotiate a pre-contract with clubs outside of France starting in January. Gomes currently earns £12,000-per-week, but his expected salary demands for a new deal could reach £150,000-per-week.
While Newcastle remains interested in Gomes, reports suggest they may struggle to compete financially with other clubs, leaving United and Spurs in a stronger position. United’s interest stems not only from Gomes’ homegrown status, which benefits their quota, but also from his potential fit in Erik ten Hag’s system. United’s manager has instructed scouts to monitor Gomes’ progress closely, as his playmaking style could add a new dimension to United’s midfield.
Gomes, known for his high passing volume and ability to control play from deep, could help United dictate matches more effectively. While United’s style under Ten Hag tends to favor vertical and direct play, Gomes’ skill set could offer more control and balance, making him a valuable asset as they consider bringing him back to Old Trafford.
