BREAKING: Sinner Faces Struggles, Yet Soars at Shanghai Masters…
Jannik Sinner continued his impressive run at the 2024 Shanghai Masters by defeating Tomas Martin Etcheverry in a challenging three-set match. Sinner’s journey in China began at the China Open in Beijing, where he reached the final but was thwarted by Carlos Alcaraz.
After quickly transitioning to Shanghai, Sinner won his opening match against Taro Daniel in straight sets before facing Etcheverry in the third round. The Argentine, known for his strong serve and aggressive play, posed a significant challenge for Sinner.
With rainy weather forcing the match to be played indoors, both players showcased solid serving throughout the first set, resulting in no breaks. Sinner had to dig deep to overcome Etcheverry’s relentless attacking style, setting the stage for a tightly contested battle.
Etcheverry earned the first break point of the match at 3-3, but Sinner saved it. The Italian then had his own break point after taking a 6-5 lead, but Etcheverry held strong, forcing a tiebreak where he dominated, ultimately winning it 7-3. With impressive serving and more winners, Etcheverry set a high standard in that first set.
After losing the opener, Sinner regrouped for the second set, breaking early but then relinquishing the lead. Nevertheless, he found his rhythm and broke again, securing the set 6-4 with a much-improved performance that included 14 winners and just six unforced errors.
Sinner continued to apply pressure in the third set, generating multiple break point opportunities, ultimately converting two to seal the match at 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-2 and advance to the fourth round.
Post-match, Sinner reflected on the mental and physical challenges of the match, acknowledging the need to elevate his game after the first set. “It was a tough match physically and also mentally. I’m very happy that I’m through this one. Let’s see what’s coming,” he stated, emphasizing his focus on the next challenge ahead.
