Bruins Open Extension Talks with Head Coach Jim Montgomery
Boston Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery is entering the final year of his current contract, and discussions about an extension are already underway. General manager Don Sweeney confirmed on Wednesday that the team has initiated extension talks with Montgomery, who has led the team for two seasons. During a press conference, Sweeney acknowledged the ongoing discussions, but emphasized keeping the details private, much like team captain Brad Marchand’s stance on his own contract matters.
When asked how the lack of an extension might impact his approach to the season, Montgomery assured reporters that it would not be a distraction. “I don’t think it would affect me, just being honest,” Montgomery said. He emphasized his focus on the present and improving daily, explaining that staying in the moment is crucial. Whether on an eight-year or one-day contract, his approach remains unchanged, aligning with the mindset he expects from his players.
Montgomery’s tenure as head coach, which began in July 2022, has been marked by impressive regular-season performances. The Bruins posted a remarkable 112-32-20 record under his leadership, setting NHL records for the most wins and points during the 2022-23 regular season. Despite these achievements, the team faced early playoff exits, including a devastating Game 7 overtime loss to the Florida Panthers in the first round of the 2022-23 postseason.
Montgomery’s system has been a great fit for the team, particularly benefiting younger players like Jeremy Swayman, Trent Frederic, and Mason Lohrei. His ability to connect with players has earned him the reputation of a “player’s coach.” With Montgomery’s success, it would be a wise move for both sides to secure a contract extension before the season begins. However, the Bruins also have the pressing task of finalizing a new deal for Swayman, their top goaltender, who remains a restricted free agent.
