Collingwood Emerges as a Potential New Home for Young Midfielder
In a surprising turn of events, midfielder Matthew Kennedy has been left searching for a new club after Carlton decided to part ways with him following a solid 2024 season. Having played every game this year and proving himself as one of only three Blues to do so, Kennedy’s departure marks the end of a significant seven-year chapter with Carlton, where he made his mark in the navy blue.
Despite his strong performance in 2024, where he showcased his skills and durability, the depth of Carlton’s midfield talent may have influenced the club’s decision to move on from the 27-year-old. Drafted at pick 13 in the 2015 National Draft, Kennedy’s breakout year came in 2022, where he averaged nearly 25 disposals over 17 matches. While he played a key role in supporting stars like Patrick Cripps and Sam Walsh, the emergence of Adam Cerra and George Hewett has left him in search of a new opportunity, likely as a valuable addition to another team.
Among the clubs that could benefit from Kennedy’s abilities, Collingwood stands out as a prime candidate. The Magpies are in need of young talent, but they would also greatly benefit from adding an experienced inside midfielder like Kennedy to bolster their midfield depth. With veteran Scott Pendlebury nearing the end of his career and Tom Mitchell showing signs of decline, the Pies’ midfield stability is somewhat in question. Additionally, while young talents like Nick Daicos and Jack Crisp provide a solid foundation, the team lacks depth behind them, particularly as Jordan De Goey’s reliability remains uncertain.
Acquiring Kennedy could be a strategic move for Collingwood as they aim to return to contention. His experience and versatility would not only lighten the load on Daicos at stoppages but also provide the kind of rock-solid presence that is crucial for any team looking to elevate their game. As Kennedy explores his options, it’s clear that his skills would be a welcome addition to a club seeking to reinforce its midfield ahead of the next season.
