Dusty is unlikely to return as Suns rumors fade, according to his former teammate.
Richmond legend Jack Riewoldt has shut down the growing speculation about a possible retirement backflip from Dustin Martin. With rumors circulating about Martin joining the Gold Coast Suns, Riewoldt, who won three premierships alongside him, believes it’s becoming less likely that Martin will reverse his decision. Many thought Martin might reunite with former coach Damien Hardwick, now leading the Suns, but Riewoldt isn’t convinced.
During an interview on AFL360, Riewoldt expressed doubts about Martin’s return to the AFL, stating that while there’s a “romantic” appeal in seeing Martin and Hardwick team up again, the possibility of it happening seems remote. He also noted that the Suns, already equipped with the talent needed to challenge for a finals spot, may not require a big-name signing like Martin.
Riewoldt further explained that bringing Martin back would come at a steep cost, both in terms of salary cap space and marketability. However, he emphasized that the Suns are on a path of organic growth under Hardwick’s leadership and might not need the additional star power to succeed.
With the AFL Trade Period fast approaching, it appears increasingly unlikely that fans will see Martin pull on the Suns jersey, as the focus shifts to developing the talent already at the club.
