Hawthorn’s Trade Situation for the Upcoming Season.
Despite their semi-final exit at the hands of Port Adelaide, Hawthorn is positioning itself for a strong 2025 season. Josh Battle, a free agent from St Kilda, has chosen the Hawks as his preferred destination, which is a significant boost for Sam Mitchell’s squad. Hawthorn has been exposed in that area throughout the season, and Battle’s arrival will help fortify their defense. Additionally, Tom Barrass from West Coast has expressed his desire to join the Hawks, potentially costing the team up to two first-round picks. According to Jay Clark of the Herald Sun, the trade could see Hawthorn sending two first-round picks in exchange for Barrass and West Coast’s future second-round selection. Though the price is high, both Battle and Barrass are seen as essential additions to strengthen the list.
Hawthorn has also shown interest in Harry Perryman, the rebounding defender from GWS. With Perryman available as an unrestricted free agent, the Hawks have reportedly put forward a lucrative offer to secure his services. If they can pull off all three deals, it would mark a major upgrade for the club’s defensive and midfield lines. Meanwhile, Bailey Smith of the Western Bulldogs has been linked with a move, but it appears more likely that Smith will head to Geelong rather than Hawthorn.
Off the field, Chad Wingard has called time on his career after 218 games, while Denver Grainger-Barras remains unsigned for the 2025 season. With Barrass and Battle potentially joining the squad, Grainger-Barras might explore options at other clubs. Furthermore, while Ned Reeves is contracted until 2026, rival clubs view him as a possible trade target, especially after Lloyd Meek took over the ruck duties in 2024. On a positive note, veterans Luke Breust and Jack Gunston have both secured one-year contract extensions and will continue to play key roles for the team next season.
