How Hawthorn’s Young Hawks Gave a Lesson in Redemption
Moving from Wellington to Melbourne many years ago, I became an unexpected supporter of the Hawthorn Football Club, simply because I rented a house in Hawthorn. This led me to discover a love for Aussie rules football, and my loyalty to the Hawks has been repaid many times over. As one of the most successful clubs since I started following, the Hawks have given me much to cheer about, with great players and remarkable teams.
The 2024 team, however, stands out. Despite being eliminated by a narrow margin in the semifinals, this young team has brought a fresh energy to the game. Their play, full of exuberance and joy, reflects the pure spirit of sport. Under the leadership of captain James Sicily, this Hawthorn team has captivated not just Hawks fans but followers of other clubs as well. Their carefree and celebratory approach is a throwback to a time when the love of the game mattered more than the final score.
In many ways, the Hawks’ 2024 season is a story of redemption. After a decade in the wilderness, and a difficult start to the season, few would have imagined they’d come so close to a preliminary final. But this transformation, much like the concept of redemption itself, required failure, reflection, and a determined push for something better. While they may have fallen short, their resurgence is a testament to the hope that persists even when things seem darkest.
Moving forward, the Hawks face new challenges, as other teams will now anticipate their enterprising style of play. However, just as in the journey of personal or spiritual growth, that first step—acknowledging the need for change and taking action—is often the most important. The Hawks have made that leap, and while the future is uncertain, their 2024 season is a masterclass in resilience and rebirth.
