Klay Thompson Shares Honest Thoughts on Mavericks’ First Home Game Since Luka Dončić Trade

The Dallas Mavericks are preparing for an emotional night at American Airlines Center, as they host the Houston Rockets in their first home game since the shocking trade that sent Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers. With Dallas fans still struggling to process the departure of their franchise cornerstone, Klay Thompson shared his thoughts on what the atmosphere might be like when the team takes the court.
Fans have not held back in expressing their disappointment. Many have voiced their frustration across social media, where the Mavericks have experienced a noticeable drop in followers. Others have taken to the streets outside the arena, gathering in protest of the deal that brought Anthony Davis to Dallas in exchange for Dončić. The trade has undeniably shaken the fan base, and their reaction on game night remains a looming question.
Fresh off a victory against the Boston Celtics, Thompson acknowledged the tension surrounding the upcoming matchup. “There’s probably going to be a lot of heartbreak among the fans,” he admitted in an interview with ESPN. “Maybe even some boos. But as professionals, we have to embrace it. We’re paid to play and perform at the highest level.” While uncertainty lingers over how the crowd will respond, Thompson stressed the importance of staying focused and pushing forward.
He also recognized just how much Dončić meant to Dallas, drawing attention to the deep bond between the Slovenian superstar and Mavericks supporters. “I don’t know what to expect,” he continued. “Luka was so dear to every Mavs fan’s heart. But the only way to move forward is to win. If we can do that consistently and give ourselves a chance to compete for a championship, I think it will ease some of the pain and frustration.”
Mavericks guard Spencer Dinwiddie echoed similar sentiments, reflecting on the emotional weight of Dončić’s departure. He compared the situation to Dirk Nowitzki’s legendary tenure with the franchise, emphasizing how difficult it is for fans to lose a player they believed could carry the torch for another decade. “Dallas had Dirk for 20 years, and then they got what felt like Dirk 2.0 in Luka,” Dinwiddie noted. “It’s understandable why the fan base is upset.”
Head coach Jason Kidd acknowledged the emotional impact but made it clear that his focus remains on securing a win against Houston. “We understand the fans’ frustration, and we sympathize with them,” Kidd stated. “But as a coach, my job is to put the guys I have in the best position to succeed. That’s our priority right now.” With emotions running high, all eyes will be on the Mavericks as they attempt to turn the page and start a new chapter in the post-Dončić era.
