Parramatta Eels’ Top Targets Under New Coach Jason Ryles
New Parramatta Eels head coach Jason Ryles is eyeing several key signings to revamp the squad for the upcoming NRL season. With the Eels having narrowly escaped a wooden spoon finish last season, Ryles is determined to strengthen his roster, focusing on three standout players.
According to David Riccio from The Daily Telegraph, one of Ryles’ top priorities is Newcastle Knights hooker Jayden Brailey. The Eels are also considering Broncos lock Kobe Hetherington and Titans’ Tom Weaver as potential recruits. Riccio revealed that the team has been waiting to finalize their salary cap space, particularly around Reagan Campbell-Gillard’s situation, before making any concrete moves. Now that the cap space issue is becoming clearer, the pursuit of these targets is expected to intensify.
Riccio emphasized that Jayden Brailey is of particular interest to the Eels. Brailey’s on-field prowess and leadership qualities make him a valuable asset, especially for a rookie coach like Ryles, who will benefit from having experienced players to set high standards and guide the team. Brailey’s character and experience are seen as essential for establishing a strong foundation under the new coaching regime.
Additionally, Riccio discussed the potential for Parramatta to pursue Melbourne Storm fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen. However, with Melbourne also needing to manage the retention of young talent Sua Fa’alogo, the decision on Papenhuyzen’s future remains complex. While Papenhuyzen’s brilliance on the field is undeniable, his injury history might make him a risky investment. With Parramatta having recently signed Isaiah Iongi, it seems unlikely they will make a significant bid for Papenhuyzen at this time.
Jason Ryles brings a wealth of experience to Parramatta, having previously served as an assistant coach with the Melbourne Storm, Sydney Roosters, and the Wallabies under Eddie Jones. His new role at the Eels marks an exciting chapter for the club as they look to rebuild and improve their performance in the upcoming season.
