Maria Sharapova believes that Coco Gauff is astute enough to avoid distractions or unfavorable effects from coaching changes. The Russian tennis legend advises the 2023 US Open champion that different skills will be required at different stages of her career and that developing listening and trusting skills is crucial.

It should be noted that Gauff also worked with Pere Riba at the time.

But after having her career-best run during the summer of 2023, this summer was a completely different story after she lost in the Wimbledon, Paris Olympics and US Open round-of-16 and fell from a career-high ranking of No. 2 to sixth-ranked.

Failing to defend her title at Flushing Meadows and do well there ended up sealing the fate of Gilbert as Gauff’s coach as the 20-year-old probably realized that he couldn’t help her anymore.

On the Gauff issue, Sharapova
“I believe Coco has a great head on her shoulders and is aware that her team may alter with time. Later in your career, you won’t require the same things that you need at one point. I was extremely lucky to have the teams that I did. I still have a close relationship with each of my coaches. They are extremely important team players and are so powerful. A team is really essential. Establishing trust, taking advice from [your team], and learning from them all take time. But the trip is enjoyable. US Weekly was informed by the former five-time Grand Slam champion.

During her very successful career, Sharapova worked with several well-known names, including Michael Joyce, Jimmy Connors, Sven Groeneveld, Thomas Hogstedt and Riccardo Piatti, who was her last coach.

It remains to be seen when will Gauff find a new coach and who will it be.
