Super League Hooker Announces Retirement After 16-Year Rugby Career
Kyle Wood, a respected figure in rugby league, has officially announced his retirement from professional play at the age of 35. Most recently a part of the Sheffield Eagles’ squad in the Championship, Wood has decided to close the chapter on a career spanning over 350 appearances since his debut in 2008. His journey across multiple clubs and leagues has left a lasting impact on the sport.
Wood began his professional career with Doncaster before moving to Sheffield Eagles in 2009, marking the start of a long-standing relationship with the club. His performances in South Yorkshire earned him a spot in the Super League with Huddersfield Giants, where he made eight appearances. During this time, he also took up short stints with Batley Bulldogs, Castleford Tigers, and a return to Sheffield Eagles, steadily building his reputation as a reliable and dynamic player.
In 2012, Wood joined Wakefield Trinity, where he cemented his place as a top-flight talent. His time at Wakefield saw him establish himself as a vital part of the team, leading to a return to Huddersfield for three and a half years. During this tenure, he contributed to the Giants’ success in clinching the League Leaders’ Shield and making a strong run to the semi-finals of the play-offs.
Wood’s journey came full circle in 2017 when he re-signed with Wakefield Trinity. Over five seasons, he made 119 appearances and scored 18 tries, further endearing himself to fans. A subsequent move to Halifax Panthers showcased his enduring skill before he wrapped up his playing days with Sheffield Eagles in the 2024 season, making 24 appearances and scoring three tries.
Kyle Wood leaves behind a legacy of versatility, resilience, and commitment to the game. His contributions across clubs and competitions will be remembered as a testament to his dedication to rugby league.
