Texas Tech Coach Joey McGuire Envisions New Role for WR Micah Hudson
Micah Hudson, a highly touted freshman for Texas Tech, has had a challenging debut season, with limited opportunities to showcase his talent. Head coach Joey McGuire hinted this week that Hudson might see a new role as a punt returner once he returns from a lower leg injury. This development could signal the beginning of a more impactful presence for the young wide receiver.
Hudson, who was one of the nation’s top high school recruits, has played sparingly this season, appearing in eight games with just eight receptions for 123 yards. Despite flashes of his athleticism, he has been restricted to specific offensive formations, mainly Tech’s five-wide receiver set. This limited usage has puzzled fans and drawn criticism, especially since Hudson was billed as a “generational talent” by McGuire during the offseason. Adding to the frustration, Hudson has yet to score a touchdown, though he’s come close on a few occasions.
If Hudson is cleared to play against Oklahoma State, McGuire plans to test him as a punt returner. McGuire explained, “We’re hoping Micah is able to go. If not this week, then by the West Virginia game.” The Red Raiders have struggled in their punt return game this year, with Josh Kelly and Coy Eakin handling the majority of returns but failing to generate significant yardage. Kelly has averaged just 3.6 yards per return, and Eakin has fair caught every punt he’s fielded. Hudson’s inclusion in this role could inject the explosiveness that Tech’s special teams have been missing.
While moving Hudson into punt returns won’t fully address concerns about his limited offensive role, it marks a step toward making him a more integral part of the team. His early setbacks, including offseason knee surgery that kept him out of spring and summer preparations, have undoubtedly delayed his progression. However, with the coaching staff showing a renewed interest in utilizing his skills, Hudson has the potential to finally live up to the high expectations surrounding him.
