The Leeds Rhinos’ coach departs as the sporting director announces club changes.
Leeds Rhinos are undergoing significant changes, as academy and reserves coach Tony Smith steps down after two seasons. Smith, a former player for Castleford Tigers and Wigan Warriors, as well as a former head coach for Wakefield Trinity, has reportedly left his position for personal reasons. His tenure saw him take charge of Rhinos’ lower-grade sides, following his appointment as Chev Walker’s successor.
The club has not yet appointed a replacement for Smith, but Chev Walker is expected to resume the role. Walker, who previously stepped in as caretaker coach following Rohan Smith’s exit last season, may take on the academy/reserves position in the upcoming term, potentially with the support of an assistant. Walker is no stranger to success, having guided Leeds’ under-18 squad to a Grand Final victory in 2022 before transitioning to a first-team assistant coach role.
Walker’s responsibilities now center on player development, bridging the gap between the lower grades and the senior squad. This move aligns with the appointment of Jamie Langley as assistant to head coach Brad Arthur. Additionally, Leeds Rhinos have brought in a new head of strength and conditioning, Adam Magretton, as part of their broader strategy to revitalize the club’s coaching framework.
Sporting director Ian Blease emphasized the importance of these changes, highlighting the club’s commitment to investing in youth development and homegrown talent. “We are putting a lot of emphasis on quality coaching in our pathways,” Blease stated. “Our focus is on providing the best services and support for the players, ensuring their growth and success.”
The ongoing restructuring reflects the Rhinos’ dedication to fostering a robust talent pipeline while optimizing their coaching resources to maintain a competitive edge in the Super League.
