Two Trade Targets to Boost Maple Leafs’ Bottom-Six Depth and Playoff Potential

Published

on

To strengthen the Toronto Maple Leafs’ bottom-six lineup, Brad Treliving should look at two high-impact players from Anaheim and Philadelphia. These players would bring much-needed scoring depth and grit to a team that has struggled to generate offense beyond the top lines.

Adding these players would address key weaknesses for Toronto, enhancing both their physical play and overall depth. This type of roster upgrade could be exactly what the Leafs need to stay competitive through the season and into the playoffs.

1. Frank Vatrano

Frank Vatrano, a 30-year-old forward with a history of strong offensive output (including 37 goals last season), has struggled with the Ducks, posting just five points in 13 games. A move to Toronto might reignite his scoring potential, adding a reliable 20-goal threat to the third line. Trading Nick Robertson and possibly David Kampf for Vatrano would allow Robertson a fresh start, while Vatrano’s $3.65M contract, although hefty, could prove a worthy investment for Toronto’s offense

2. Scott Laughton

Scott Laughton brings a gritty, two-way game that would solidify Toronto’s center depth. Known for his physical play and locker room leadership, Laughton is adept at faceoffs, penalty killing, and putting up a steady 25-40 points a season. His addition would bring veteran experience, filling gaps left by Max Domi or Pontus Holmberg at center and addressing the need for a more defensive-minded player.

Potential Lineup with Vatrano and Laughton

With these acquisitions, the Leafs’ lines might look like this:

  • First Line: Knies — Domi — Marner
  • Second Line: Pacioretty — Tavares — Nylander
  • Third Line: Vatrano — Laughton — McMann
  • Fourth Line: Dewar — Lorentz — Holmberg

This setup provides balanced scoring, size, and speed across the board. By spreading out talent and strengthening the third line, Treliving can alleviate some of the scoring burden on Toronto’s top players while fostering a more versatile team structure.
