Shane Flanagan Optimistic About Dragons’ Growth in 2025

St George Illawarra Dragons head coach Shane Flanagan has expressed confidence in his team’s potential for improvement in 2025, despite the departure of key players. The Dragons have parted ways with Zac Lomax, a New South Wales State of Origin representative, and former captain Ben Hunt, a Queensland Maroons stalwart. Both players were released from their contracts after significant upheaval, with Lomax being moved to the wing earlier in the season and Hunt’s release coming after protracted negotiations.

Flanagan has used the offseason to bolster his squad with seasoned recruits. Joining the Dragons are Damien Cook, a former South Sydney Rabbitohs hooker; Valentine Holmes, a North Queensland Cowboys centre; and Clint Gutherson, a fullback from the Parramatta Eels. In addition, Lachlan Ilias, a halfback previously out of favor at the Rabbitohs, has signed on and is expected to take the number seven jersey for Round 1. These acquisitions aim to provide the Dragons with a mix of skill, leadership, and experience.

Speaking to SEN Radio, Flanagan emphasized the strides made by his team during 2024 and the potential for even greater success in 2025. “We will be better again,” Flanagan stated. “This past year was a learning curve. Players worked hard to improve their fitness and strength, which elevated their performance. With the talent we’ve added, I’m confident we’ll be an improved football team next season.” He singled out Gutherson as a standout addition, praising his athleticism and endurance, while also highlighting Holmes’ impact as a left centre.

The Dragons exceeded expectations in 2024, narrowly missing the finals after being tipped as likely wooden spoon contenders. Young talent like Tyrell Sloan, who will shift to the wing to accommodate Gutherson, and rising stars such as Ryan and Toby Couchman and five-eighth Lykhan King-Togia, provided a strong foundation. In 2025, the club will look to build on these performances while integrating emerging prospects like Loko Pasfiki Tonga and Jason Halangahu. Flanagan remains optimistic, calling the team’s development a reflection of their growing cohesion and experience.
